How I did so.
When I first started losing weight, I knew that it was going to be something that would be difficult for me because of the fact that I always ate a lot of junk food. For this reason, I was a little bit dubious about the extent to which I was going to be able to sort out my own diet. However, I knew that it was something that I was going to have to do, and if I didn’t there was no way that I would ever be able to lose the weight that I was aiming to do.
The first thing that I decided to do was make a food diary for a week. After I ate every single little bit of food, I had to write it down on a piece of paper that I was keeping beside the chair in which I sit. When I read this back after the end of the week, I was shocked to see the amount that I was eating in the evening. I wasn’t even eating as much as I might have done in the past at this point either because of the fact that I was having to record it and write everything down, so I can only imagine what my diet must have been like before I’d chosen to do this. I noticed first of all that the evening was always where I fell down. I began to think about why this might have been. I realised that a lot of the time in the evening I eat because I’m bored rather than because I’m hungry, so I decided that I was going to have to give myself something else that I could be doing instead of eating. I bought myself some books and some DVDs and this was supposed to help me to keep busy. It did work for a couple of weeks, and by the time I had finished the books I found that I was out of the habit of eating late at night. I found that I was able to lose a stone in weight just from doing this, and that was something that I was very proud of indeed. I knew that I still had more that I had to change though, so I took a look at the diary that I’d written.
The next thing that I knew I had to change was my desserts. I would always have something like ice cream after my dinner, and a biscuit at lunch time. There was no need for this, as it was nothing but junk food, so I changed to having no dessert at lunch time at all and having a yoghurt at dinner time. Yoghurt is something that is good for you, and I soon found that I liked the taste very much and I now look forward to the evening when I am able to have it. When I don’t have much to do during the course of the evening, I will have my yoghurt a couple of hours after dinner to save me snacking on other things if I happened to get bored during that time.
Another thing that I changed was the fact that I had bread with everything. If I made a meal, I would always have a piece of bread alongside it. I worked out that I would be saving 200 calories a day if I stopped doing this, not to mention however many calories were in the spread that I used. So I stopped that.
When I was looking at the types of meat that I was eating, I found that there were probably a lot of calories in them. I switched to Quorn, which is aimed at vegetarians but actually has much better nutritional value than “real” meat. I personally can’t tell all that much difference with the taste, and this means that I am happy with the things that I’m eating.
This is pretty much all that I changed about my diet, and I have managed to lose a lot of weight and am still going. Of course I do a little exercise as well, but diet is much more important than you may think it is. I would recommend really stopping to think about what you’re putting into your body before you worry about exercising, as you may find that you are able to make much more of a difference than you thought just from diet alone.
