Breast Cancer Symptoms
Things to look out for.
A lump, or thickened area of tissue, in your breast is usuall the main and most common symptoms of breast cancer. The majority of breast lumps are found by the women who have them so it is important to check your breast often and look for any lumps or changes in the appearance, feel, or shape of your breasts. The sooner a cancerous lump is detected the higher the chance of successful treatment.
You should see you GP if you have any of the following:
- a lump
- a thickened area of tissue
- discharge from either of your nipples
- bleeding of the nipples
- a lump in your armpits
- a change in the size of either breast
- dimpling on the skin of your breasts
- a rash around your nipple
- pain in either of your breasts or armpits
If you do find a lump in your breast, you should remember that it may not be the result of breast cancer. In fact, 90% of breast lumps are non-cancerous. A breast lump may be simply caused by a harmless cyst (a small fluid-filled lump), or fibroadenoma (a non-cancerous growth) You may also find that your breasts feel lumpy just before your period.
However, if you notice any changes to one, or both, of your breasts, you should always get it checked by your GP.
