Female Sexual Disorders: Science is Looking for Answers

Female sexual disorders were brought to light with the introduction of Viagra 10 years ago. Research scientists are studying drugs that could one day be the female equivalent to Viagra.

The problem that Viagra solved brought another long standing, but un-talked about problem to light; female sexual disorders.

When Viagra was introduced almost 10 years ago, it disrupted the balance that many couples had settled into. Suddenly, middle-aged and older husbands were ready, willing AND able, and expected their same-aged wives to respond in kind. That gave women who used to be too embarrassed to talk about their sexual disorders that boldness to start seeking information and help. Science is responding by studying drugs that could one day be the Viagra equivalent for women.

Many women suffer from female sexual disorders, and the sexual disorders are as individual as the female herself, but are divided into four categories: lack of desire, difficulty with arousal, pain during sex or the inability to achieve orgasm.

Women who had suffered in silence with their sexual disorders and muddled their way through sexual relationships now want more, just like their male counterparts. Viagra put the pressure on women, now women are putting the pressure on science.

There are currently no drugs in the United States for treating female sexual disorders. Doctor’s do prescribe hormones for women and/or topical creams to stop the painful intercourse or to increase blood flow to the female genitalia to help with sexual desire issues. Discuss those treatment options with your gynecologists and also discuss physical therapy an behavioral therapy, which are the only treatment options for female sexual disorders.

Physical therapy involves loosening the tight muscles around the vagina and behavioral therapy deals with whatever psychological blocks to sex that a woman may have.

You are not alone and don’t have to suffer your female sexual disorder in silence any longer. There is help now and hope for the future as science looks for the answer.
