HEALTHY SNACKS FOR THOSE MUNCHY MOMENTS

We all, or most of us, throughout the day have those moments when we just need a little something to nibble and munch on, that tide me over, get me through snack that will carry us through the rest of our busy day until dinner time.  There is nothing wrong with a snack break.  On a whole they are good for us so long as we are eating healthy snacks, snacks that are not loaded with all that fat, salt and sugar and unhealthy preservatives that give food longer shelf life; and we don’t turn our snack break into a three course meal.

A lot of the time when we think we are hungry, what we really are is thirsty.  Our body is calling for water.  We need to re-hydrate so water and maybe a piece of fruit or some raw veggies is probably all we need.  Water is essential.  It is also perfectly okay to enjoy a light snack and if you are a dieting person you need to include snacks in your diet.  It will actually help you to stick to your diet better and when you do sit down to a meal you will eat right, or more right than if you sit down to the table feeling starved and take and eat more than your body really needs to be healthy.  A healthy snack helps you to spread good nutrition throughout the day and will keep your energy up and your stress and anxiety levels down.  Having a healthy snack can actually help you lose weight or control you weight.

Snacks made with whole grains, nuts, fruit, vegetables and dairy and protein foods are wonderful for you and they count towards getting your daily requirements in these foods that we all need every day to be healthy.  Just a little with a full glass of water will take away that mid-afternoon let down, feeling tired and worn out and give you that needed boost that you need get rid of that munching madness so you aren’t reaching for those unhealthy snacks or over eating at your next regular meal.

Here are some healthy snack ideas. How about a cup of yogurt mixed with some chopped up pieces of fresh fruit or vegetable and sprinkled with a tablespoon of chopped nuts; it makes a really tasty snack and does your body good.  I love yogurt with shredded carrot, chopped celery and a handful of raisins.  It is really good.   Eat a tomato plain or sprinkled with a little lemon juice and a dash of crushed basil or eat an apple or a banana with a couple small pieces of hard cheese.  Eat foods you actually have to chew.  Try nibbling on a handful of Trail Mix or have a hardboiled egg and a slice of whole grain toast.  Eat an orange.  Have a cup of green tea or a glass of Herb-ade, even a glass of milk, 2% or fat-free and don’t forget the water.  Nibble on some cucumber spears or carrot or celery sticks, papaya or mango, 3 or 4 chewy dates or a couple figs.  Have a small dish of oatmeal with some raisins and a sprinkle of cinnamon over the top. A handful of blueberries make a wonderful snack and they are so delicious and very good for you.  Have 3 or 4 fresh strawberries to munch on.
