Is It Healthier to Go Braless?

The idea that going braless can lower your breast cancer risk has been bantered around for years. Is there any truth to this statement?

It’s unlikely that most women would feel comfortable going braless on a daily basis. But what would you do if it affected your health? The idea that going braless might lower your breast cancer risk is one that’s been bantered around for several years. It seems to have started after a Harvard study showed an increased breast cancer risk in women who wear bras relative to those who go braless on a regular basis. This idea eventually led to the publication of a book entitled, Dressed to Kill, written by two anthropologists who did their own unscientific survey and came to a similar conclusion. In their book, they brought forth various theories and reasons as to why women who don’t wear bras might have a lower breast cancer rate.

How might going braless decrease the risk of breast cancer and should you be concerned if you wear a bra? One theory put forth by the authors of Dressed to Kill as well as other experts is that wearing a bra causes compression of the lymphatic system leading out of the breasts which could impair the drainage of toxins. The idea was also put forth that women who exercise may have a lower risk of breast cancer because exercise increases movement of the breasts, helping to promote better lymphatic flow and elimination of cancer causing toxins. Although this may sound plausible at first, there hasn’t been a study to support these conclusions. Even with the Harvard study that initially sparked the controversy, the results barely reached statistical significance. Plus, even if there were an association, it could be related to other factors such as the fact that larger breasted women are more likely to be overweight and more likely to wear a bra. Obese women are known to have a higher risk of breast cancer.

Although there hasn’t been a recent well controlled study that shows an association between going braless and a reduced risk of breast cancer, some anecdotal evidence suggests that going braless can improve the symptoms of fibrocystic breasts changes. Fibrocystic breast syndrome is a benign syndrome characterized by the formation of numerous breast cysts which fluctuate in size with the menstrual cycle. These can be very uncomfortable for some women and can make a breast self exam difficult.

Should you buy into the unproven theory that going braless reduces your risk of breast cancer? Although there’s no evidence to suggest that forgoing your bra in the name of health is necessary, it might be wise to avoid tight fitting bras with underwires. It might also be healthier to give yourself a break from wearing a bra at night when you’re at home and to avoid wearing a bra to bed.

All in all, as far as what is currently known, there seems no basis for going braless on a regular basis. You can relax and continue to enjoy wearing that pretty bra from Victoria Secrets.

  1. how do toxins cause cancer?

Cancer is a rapid form of mitosis, or cell division, how can a toxin cause mitosis to spin out of control?

  2. I go braless only because bra straps are a bit painful on the shoulders and my boyfriend loves it. He says it also makes me look sexy!

  3. To the first poster: toxin build-up can increase one’s chances of getting cancer. Take lung cancer for example; yes, there are people who get it and have never even uttered the word “cigarette,” but there are just as many (if not more) people who got it mostly because of all the smoking they did. I assume that toxins that enter the body (via the polluted atmosphere, etc.) cancer also cause the mutation of cells and increase one’s risk of breast cancer. But, of course, this is all guestimation. =]

But could a woman’s bra actually be dangerous to her health?

“Our research has shown that the bras issue, we believe is the leading cause of breast cancer”, said Sydney Ross Singer, who wrote a book about what he believes is a link between breast cancer and bras.

“In fact to look at breast disease and ignore bras is like looking at foot disease and ignoring tight shoes,” said Singer.

Singer’s center conducted a study involving five thousand American women, half had breast cancer.

They looked at past behavior, including how tight the bras were and how long the women wore them. Here’s what they found:

Women who wore a bra for 24 hours a day, had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer.

If a bra is worn 12 hours a day, there was a 1 in 7 risk.

And women who didn’t wear a bra had about the same rate of developing breast cancer as a man.

“So what’s happening with the bra is that women are preventing the proper flushing of fluid and toxins out of their breasts,” said Singer.

Singer claims a bra is too constricting, interfering with the body’s lymphatic system.

This causes toxins to build up, eventually causing cancer.

“If you get rid of the bra, your breasts will finally be able to flush out the fluid,” said Singer.

But mainstream medical doctors dismiss the study.

“There’s no evidence in any of the world research data that I’m aware of that supports the fact that breast cancer risk is increased by wearing a bra or a bra that’s too tight,” said Dr. Ermilo Barrera of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Barrera says women should get mammograms to reduce risk factors and not worry about their bras.

“Watch their weight, exercise, drink only in moderation and don’t smoke,” said Doctor Hussein.

Doctor Atif Hussein, Medical Director at the Memorial Cancer Institute calls the bra study interesting, but said, “it really is hard to tell you wearing the bra in itself was the contributing factor.”

He says it’s not the bra, but the risk factors of the women who wear them that is the deciding factor.

“Women who may be overweight tend to wear bras, therefore I would say the factors that contributed to those women wearing the bra contributed to their high risk rather than the bra itself,” said Doctor Hussein. He said the issue should be studied more.

But despite criticism from the medical community, Singer is sticking to his mission saying, “there’s absolutely nothing good about bras, it’s completely a fashion accessory.”

He is encouraging women to banish their bras for better health, saying, “We live in a culture where women feel insecure with a natural bust line, but if the price of fashion is disease, then you have to decide whether you want to participate in that or not.”

Singer is now studying women who go bra-free to find out if they have lower rates of breast cancer.

  7. Of course it is! Your boobs need to breath and air out. Also, if you wear a bra 24/7, then your boobs get used to always having support, and will get saggier than they normally are when you’re without a bra
