Straight Talk About Women’s Health Problems
Here are a few embarrassing health problems that women do not like to talk about. Usually there is help if we look for it.
Most of us have trouble talking to our doctors about embarrassing health problems but sometimes there is help available.
Experiencing mild urinary incontinence: It is an embarrassing experience no doubt about it and one that we don’t like to talk about. Maybe it’s just a few drops when we sneeze or cough. Or others may feel an urgent need to go. There are good reasons for it. After childbirth or menopause there is a weakening of the pelvic floor muscles which help bladder control. Being over weight can make things worse because it puts more strain on the pelvic muscles. One way to strengthen your pelvic floor is the Kegel exercises. You do this by tensing the muscles around the vagina and anus several times, while avoiding tightening your stomach, legs or buttocks. Hold for three seconds, release, and repeat, building up to 15 repetitions three times a day. Wear a panty liner to catch any leaks. You can also wear a tampon during heavy exercise or anytime you want to be extra confident. I know it’s embarrassing but if it is a big problem, ask your doctor about medication. And surgery as a last resort.
Thinning hair: For many women thinning hair is hereditary. Rogaine has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and has helped some women. but if your hair is coming out in wads it could be a sign of a thyroid condition. It can be diagnosed by a blood test and there are treatments for it. Other causes for thinning hair are dieting, damage by dryers, dyes, and styling. Some medications can cause it, even birth control pills. Talk to your doctor he might be able to change your medications. If you have had a new baby that could be the cause and it will correct itself.
Body noise: Some women are embarrassed by those little farting noises from the vagina during sex. It is completely normal and men don’t mind it at all. It is the air being forced in and out of the vagina. Passing gas is something else particularly embarrassing to women but it is normal to pass gas. You may be more prone to it during your period. If it is especially bothersome cut out beans, cabbage, and soda.
