What Causes Vaginal Dryness?

Approximately 95% of women experience decreased lubrication at least some time.

Vaginal dryness, in the majority of cases, can be perfectly normal.  The Bartholin’s glands, which are located at the entrance of the vagina, release moisture during lovemaking to allow for easy penetration.  Vaginal moisture is controlled by estrogen.

The vagina can become dry because of illness; insufficient foreplay during sex; during certain times of the menstrual cycle; or if you’re taking medications or have a hormone imbalance.

Medications that can cause this problem include some antibiotics that will destroy both your infection and the normal bacteria in the vagina; anti-histamines, which are used for colds to decrease congestion; and some birth control pills with a very low dose of estrogen.

It’s also important to remember that stress can cause the Bartholin’s glands to decrease production of fluid.  And if you exercise excessively, it can cause a hormone imbalance which in turn may reduce estrogen production.

Vaginal infection can also cause decreased lubrication.  Allergies to bath products, feminine hygiene sprays, and soap may also cause dryness.

If there is only an occasional decrease in lubrication, such as on specific days during your menstrual cycle, during sex, or when you are taking antibiotics, personal lubricant available in the pharmacy.  If eliminating the common causes does not resolve the problem, consult your physician.
