The Vital Functions of Human Heart and Its Rate

A healthy heart depends on the health of its tissue, and healthy cardiac tissue depends on saturation with large, healthy supply routes. This saturation coverage, or vascularization, is one of the most important benefits of the training effect, and nowhere is it more evident or more important, than it is in the heart.


The second factor that indicates the health of the heart is the heart rate. Well-conditioned hearts, as they grow larger and stronger, can beat more slowly because they’re pumping more blood with each stroke. Nearly all of the great distance runners have had low heart rates. In fact, some are reported to have a resting rate of 32 beats per minute. Even highly conditioned anaerobic athletes, such as football players, sprinters or weightlifters, have resting heart rates far below that of the average person. The average young office worker has one of about 75 – 80.

What yours? Sit still for five minutes in front of a clock, then take your pulse for one minute. If you’re 80 beats or above, you’re not in good condition. The first thing to do is to get up off that chair and get to work. You save your heart some of those 20,000 – 30,000 extra beats you’ve forced on it everyday.

It can be done. Training also reduces maximum heart rates, which is just as important. Healthy hearts will peak out at 190 beats per minute or less, and without strain, while poorly conditioned hearts may go as high as 220 beats or more per minute during exhausting activity, which is dangerously high.

Treadmill tests show that those with well-conditioned hearts can literally do twice as much work, run twice as fast or twice as long, and with a lower heart rate than those with poorly conditioned hearts. Some supremely well-conditioned athletes, like distance-runner athletes have been run to exhaustion on treadmills, yet their heart rates never exceeded 165 – 170 beats per minute.

What lower heart rates really mean, then, is that at rest the heart is conserving energy (saving at least 15,000 beats per day), and that during activity it has built-in protection against beating too fast and suffering strain or failure.

Finally, training can condition the heart not only to reduce its maximum rate but also strengthen it so that it can hold near-maximum rates for longer periods before fatigue sets in. Some of the astronauts, remember, had heart rates of around 170 during their exhausting extravehicular activity. And don’t forget the cross-country skiers who have been known to hold heart rates of up to 170 for as much as 2 ½ hours at a clip!
