Alcohol is converted into a chemical substance called acetaldehyde. This substance is responsible for hangover. But acetaldehyde and DNA damage cells, leading to cancer.

People who consume too much alcohol and who smoke have a high level of acetaldehyde in saliva. Although there is no clear evidence to show that alcohol is a carcinogen, it may affect the structure of human body cells.

Alcohol interacts with certain enzyme that normally helps detoxify the body and harmful substances that enter. Contact with alcohol these enzymes increase the toxicity of certain carcinogens. Also, along with alcohol and poor nutrition, alcohol increases the risk of bowel cancer.

Excessive consumption of alcohol can result in abnormalities of how nutrients are processed. Alcohol reduces levels of iron, zinc, vitamin E and some B vitamins in the body. Also, alcohol interferes in the proper functioning of the immune system. Thus, alcoholics are more prone to infections and cancer.
