Warning for Azithromycin and Levofloxacin Antibiotics and What Can Happen If You Take It

Here is all about these two antibiotics.

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), a warning to the public and doctors that the antibiotics azithromycin (Zithromax and Zmax) and levofloxacin (Levaquin) can cause the chance from death from cardiovascular reasons and especially heart rhythm disturbances.

The NEJM author of the study figured this out by searching the records of the 3.5 million Tennessee Medicaid patients and they were three times more of a risk of sudden cardiac death. When they took azithromycin, commonly called the five day “ZPAK” than those who took no antibiotic.

When comparing those who took azithromycin and amoxicillin (Amoxil), the people who took the azithromycin are 2.5 times more likely to die. which means 47-245 more cardiovascular deaths.

People who took Levofloxacin had a 50 per cent of death from cardiovascular reasons than those who took Amoxicillin. In 2010 48 million prescriptions were given out for it. Nine million prescriptions were written for levofloxacin in 2010,

The problem is that these anitbiotics are given too freely. A person gets a cold and goes to the doctor to demand an antibiotic when a cold is really a virus and antibiotics only work for bacterial infections.

Some people have used it with success for a bacterial infections. But I doubt after this report many doctors will prescribe these two antibiotics.

But if you do have a bacterial infection, like the time I had a sinus infection and didn’t know it and it went to my ear and it hurt so bad I couldn’t open my mouth to talk or eat for two weeks even with an antibiotic. That is what you use antibiotics for, not a sinus headache.

If you have a cold, a viral infection, wait it out, it will go away in a few days.

  1. Working as a Medical Secretary, I also typed medical protocols for new drug developments for this team of Doctors. The toxicity of of medication for some of the most uncomplicated conditions were phenomenal. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Very important message…you are right, too many people take antibiotics when it’s not needed, the overuse of them, may cause a problem when one is in dire need of antibiotics.
    Good article.

  3. Very useful share indeed. Nicely described pattiann.

  4. writing is very good and beneficial to share :)

  5. Wow. Thanks for the warning. Sure didn’t know we could die by just taking the wrong antibiotics.

  6. Thanks for the warning. I had pneumonia recently and was given a Z-pak and then Levaquin when the Z-pak didn’t work. I’d never take either medication for a cold, but I’d probably ask my doctor if there’s anything else I could take if I got pneumonia again.

  7. The best thing is to avoid antibiotics altogether. So many people are forcing their doctors to prescribe them antiobiotics when it is not really needed and vice versa.. Thanks for the warning maybe it will make them think.

  8. Great Piece and I am sure it will help many
