Why Teens May be Prone to Eating Disorders

Having teenage children can be a very difficult thing to deal with.

Teenagers are going through all sorts of changes with their hormones and can be heavily influenced by the people they see and spend time with in school.  This puts social pressures on them to act and look a certain way.  For those that do not fit the social “norm,” there can be ridicule and feelings of worthlessness.  While there are many things that you will be worrying about, one thing that can be especially dangerous during this time can be the development of an adolescent eating disorder.

Eating disorders are very common among teenagers because of the pressures by those in their social circles.  Different forms of media can also heavily influence what a teenager thinks of him or herself.  When teens are bombarded by advertisements, movies, television shows, magazines and Internet sites hat make it a point to stress an “ideal” body, it can be hard to ignore. 

The sad thing is that any teenager can become subject to these feelings, so it is extremely important to have a good relationship with your teenagers and be able to talk to them about them.  If you suspect that your teen has an adolescent eating disorder you can contact try to talk to them about it and get further help, such as counseling or support groups, if necessary.
