When you suddenly feel your lips twitching, it can bring about a moment of panic. While this sensation is annoying, it probably is not a sign of anything that you need to worry about. Often, this can happen completely randomly. Lip twitching can also occur because of excess emotion, high levels of caffeine intake, tiredness, stress or a lack of potassium and other nutrients.
If you only experience lips twitching every once in a while, it is probably not a reason to become too concerned. If you frequently experience this problem, then you may want to get checked out by your doctor to make sure that a more serious condition is not at fault.
Why Does Lips Twitching Happen?
You experience this twitching sensation because the muscles next to your lips are contracting and relaxing quickly. Often, the muscle movement is so small or fast that other people cannot see that your lip is even moving. In some cases, it may be large enough to see.
If you have occasional lip twitching, it may be due to your current lifestyle. Many people experience lip twitching when they are going through withdrawal symptoms as they quit using alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine or drugs. This symptom can also occur if you have consumed an exceptional amount of caffeine from items like coffee, caffeine pills, energy drinks, chocolate or soda. Other than caffeine or withdrawal symptoms, you may also experience lip twitching in response to stress, anxiety, fear or fatigue. It can also happen if one or more of your facial nerves have become damaged.

If you have been experiencing lip twitching for a while, then it is time to figure out the cause. Temporary lip twitching is generally not a sign to worry, but an underlying medical condition may be at fault if you experience lip twitching over the long term. The following causes could be the reason why you are experiencing persistent lip twitching.
When you are under stress, it can make facial tics more noticeable. If you normally have facial ticks, then this condition will generally improve as you get older. Tics are most likely to occur around your face, eyes and lips. They are also more likely if you are under stress or emotional strain.
2. Bell’s Palsy
A medical condition like Bell’s palsy could be causing your lip twitching. This condition can damage facial nerves. It can also result in symptoms like facial swelling, problems speaking or a facial droop. If you experience these symptoms, go to your doctor to find out if Bell’s palsy is the cause.
Tremors can be the reason why your lip twitches, but there is generally an underlying cause for the trigger. Stress, medication or other problems can cause tremors to occur on your lips or on other spots on your body.
This condition occurs when your body is not producing enough parathormone hormones. This basically causes your calcium and phosphorous levels to drop. As a result, you may experience muscle spasms on your lips, face or mouth.

6. Facial Spasms
A hemi-facial spasm can cause contractions in your face and twitching. This is often worsened by fatigue, stress or anxiety. Some people also experience facial spasms because of a small tumor or cyst that grows against one of the facial nerves.
7. Other Potential Causes of Lips Twitching
While it is less common, a persistent lip twitch could also be a symptom of Tourette’s syndrome or DiGeorge syndrome. If you cannot figure out the cause of your twitching and it does not go away, it is important to go to your doctor to make sure that a more serious condition is not at fault.
Treatment Options for Lip Twitching
Obviously, your main goal should be to treat the cause of your lip twitching. If it is due to a medical condition, start by treating that condition. If you are experiencing temporary lip twitching, then start by limiting your intake of alcohol, drugs and caffeine. You can put a warm, wet cloth next to the place where the twitching occurred to help relax it.
If stress is one of the causes of your lip twitching, you should try to reduce your stress levels. Meditation and yoga are excellent ways to reduce stress and anxiety. Since lack of sleep can cause twitching as well, you should also increase the amount of sleep you get each night. Try eating a diet that is rich in potassium and other nutrients. Fruits and vegetables provide the vitamins your body needs naturally, and this can help prevent tremors.
