Orthodontists are especially trained dentists who take care of misalignment of teeth and other problems that are caused by it. Correction of the position of teeth is extremely important to stay healthy and look good as well. The best treatments prescribed by Orthodontists are braces. They are available in various types of materials like metal, ceramics, plastic etc and they work by applying pressure to the teeth continuously to move the set of teeth from the wrong position to the correct place where they should be to perform all activities like eating, chewing, speaking and others.

Orthodontists Retainers are advised after the braces are removed. The main work of retainers is to prevent any lapses of the teeth and to hold the teeth in their new positions until they are permanently settled. These retainers are usually made from hygienic metal although now there are other types also.

Metal retainers are visible and so even if they work efficiently in correcting the most complicated misalignment of the teeth, patients do not wish to wear them. The special types of retainers that are made from acrylic also have some elements of metal in them. The stainless steel brackets in the retainers cannot be seen because they loop over the molars from the back so that the retainers stay in their proper place. A wire known as “bow” is used to hold the front teeth in position. These retainers are clear pink in color and so match with the gums. Although this polypropylene material covers the entire teeth, it is less noticeable.

There are various reasons why most patients prefer the clear retainers over the metal ones.

  1. Although metal retainers are strong and durable and can be adjusted if required, they are heavy and the metal wires cause speech problems and are sometimes painful also. The face of the wearer looks odd as they are quite unsightly. But the clear retainers are more comfortable, look better and take care of the teeth even at night. But it is very important to get the accurate fitting as they cannot be changed later.

  2. Maintaining proper hygiene is an important aspect of retainers. They need to be brushed regularly to avoid plaque formation. Special brushes should be used in cases where the patient uses clear retainers. Oral hygiene is one of the most important habits that must be inculcated in a man’s life from the very start if one wishes to stay healthy.

Misalignment can be treated by Orthodontists by various improved methods nowadays by the use of high quality braces and retainers and it is this specialist who decides which will be the best option for the patient. Hence it is wise to rest on their opinions for best results.
