Blepharitis of The Eye

Blepharitis is an eye disease that causes swollen eyelids, itching, irritation and sometimes crusting. Good eye hygiene is of the utmost importance. Cortisone cream should be used very cautiously if at all. It will sometimes do more damage than the original problem. The following is especially for those suffering from this eye disease or want more information about it.

If your eye lids are chronically itchy, swollen and red you most likely have blepharitis. It’s an inflammation of the eye lids which causes irritation, itching, swollen eyelids and sometimes red eyes. the eyelids are composed of mucus membranes on the inside and skin on the outside. In between are a cartilage plate with muscles and glands. This is  where the inflammation originates. Blepharitis can began in early childhood or any time in life. It’s a chronic condition and can appear in one or two ways.

Seborrheic blepharitis is redness of the lids with scales and flaking around the eyelashes. It’s sometimes associated with dandruff of the scalp. Sometimes treating the scalp for dandruff will help.

Ulcerative blepharitis is caused by bacteria and usually causes matted crusts around the eyelashes. When removed it causes small ulcers that may bleed or ooze. The white part of the eye may turn red. Sometimes the cornea will become inflamed. In both types of blepharitis, you may lose eyelashes and the edges of the eyelids may become distorted with chronic tearing.

Strict hygiene is required for both types.

1. Fill a small glass with warm water.

2. Add three drops of baby shampoo.

3. Take a clean cotton ball and soak it in the solution.

4. Gently scrub each eyelid for two minutes with eyes closed.

5. Gently dry with clean cloth.

Do this at least twice every day.

Treatment of scalp with anti dandruff shampoos may also be helpful.

In more severe cases, antibiotics or cortisone preparations may be prescribed by your doctor. Once the acute phase is past, hygiene as described above should continue. Do not use cortisone long term, or maybe not at all. It has serious side effects. It can cause glaucoma and infections of the eye worse than the original condition.

Eye disease can strike at any age. Some do not cause any symptoms until the damage is past remedying. Most blindness can be prevented if treated early. Medical examinations are important. So see your ophthalmologist regularly.
