The Health Benefits of Zumba Dance

Are you looking for a fun way to get into shape? Discover the benefits of Zumba – a fast-paced dance workout that firms and tones without feeling like exercise at all.

There’s a new exercise craze that’s taking the fitness world by storm. Instead of sweating it out on the treadmill or on an exercise bike, fitness buffs are toning and firming to the beat of Latin dance music in a type of choreographed dance routine called Zumba. What is Zumba? It’s a way to firm, tone, and sweat while doing a lively, upbeat Latin dance routine – and many people swear by the results. What are the benefits of Zumba?

Benefits of Zumba: It’s a total body workout.

With weight lifting and resistance training, you’re focusing in on one group of muscles at a time. Even when you do cardio on the treadmill or an exercise bike, you’re mostly working the lower body. Zumba provides a total body toning routine along with a heart pumping aerobic workout. It’s a way to get toned, benefit the heart, and burn calories all at the same time.

Benefits of Zumba: It’s upbeat and fun.

What’s the most common reason people stop exercising? Lack of time and boredom. Zumba addresses both of these problems by providing a total body workout in one session and making exercise fun. The music is lively and the mood is incredibly upbeat in a Zumba exercise class. Time goes by quickly because the dance routines are anything but boring. Most people look forward to coming to class – and so they keep coming – and seeing results.

Benefits of Zumba: It’s a great stress reliever.

Zumba dance routines are all about releasing your inhibitions and losing yourself in the movements. Some people who attend Zumba classes say it’s better than therapy. Not only do the energetic moves cause release of mood altering endorphins, you can feel your worries melt away as you lose yourself in the music and the movements.

Benefits of Zumba: It’s a form of interval training.

Interval training is one of the best ways to burn calories, and Zumba incorporates the principles of interval training into every workout by using alternating fast and slow sequences to vary the intensity. An hour spent in a Zumba class can burn as many as 800 calories.

Benefits of Zumba: It tones the abdominals

Many Zumba dance moves are a great way to work the core abdominal muscles – the girdle of muscles that gives the pelvis its strength. This means firmer abdominals and a lower risk of back pain.

How to started? See if there are Zumba classes being offered in your area or rent or buy a Zumba DVD to see how you like it. Attending a live class has its advantages because you can benefit from the camaraderie and upbeat atmosphere that these classes offer. Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends. Why not give it a try?

  1. Hey, I love this idea. It also reminds me of a similar article I wrote about Bollywood dancing, aptly called Bollyrobics, as a way to tone up.

  2. Very useful information

  3. I am going to learn the dance.

  4. I took my first Zumba class on Sunday and LOVE IT!! I feel better and am absolutely hooked after just one session. Can\’t wait until Thursday when I get to go again!

  5. Great information I wish I was there in Newcastle with you, if the ZUMBA Boys North East can help me drop three dress sizes i would love them forever

  6. Im a Zumba Fitness Instructor and have been since April 2010. I always tried to keep fit, watch my weight and healthy eating, but that didnt stop my health problems! Due to this and other problems involving losing jobs, financial, being stressed out and bereavements of my boyfriend, father and family pet, I suffered with depression too.

I went along to classes and loved it so much, wanted to teach. Since then my health problems are under control, I am fitter than before and feel much better too.

Not only that, I have now met so many great people who come to my classes, who are having fun, it has helped them, whether weight loss, fitness and making friends.

I have people from all walks of life, even a GP, Nurses to people with disabilities.

Its so rewarding to know it has helped others like it has me, better than any prescription/medication, I suggest everyone try it and see for themselves.

  7. i just started Zumba 2 weeks ago, everyday i go to Zumba class and its true its relieves the stress in the work area.
