10 Health Benefits of Acupuncture

Does acupuncture really work? Studies suggest it does for some ailments, but not necessarily for all illnesses. Below you’ll find ten reported health benefits of acupuncture, including such illnesses and disorders as headaches, angina, depression, infertility and more.

  1. Angina: For those who don’t know, angina is basically heart or chest pains. A June 1999 article in the American Journal of Physiology reported that electro-acupuncture, a type of acupuncture in which a pair of needles are connected to a battery that generates electric pulses, has been shown to help with angina in some patients. Further studies have suggested the same thing.
  2. Balance disorders: A study published in a 2004 issue of the International Tinnitus Journal found that a high number of victims who had suffered from balance disorders caused by whiplash had positive results when acupuncture was applied. Further research needs to be done, but this is promising for those with balance disorders.
  3. Carpal tunnel syndrome: Suffering from aches and pains to the hands and fingers caused by repetitive motions, like using a mouse or keyboard for long periods of time at work? If so, you might want to talk to your doctor about trying acupuncture. A February 1999 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine contained an article that reported on a study about treating carpal tunnel syndrome with acupuncture. In this study, a high percentage of patients who suffered from carpal tunnel announced that had little or no pain after being treated with acupuncture.
  4. Morning sickness: Several studies have suggested that acupuncture is good for helping relieve nausea during early pregnancy. One such study was reported in an October 2000 issue of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.
  5. Tennis elbow: Also known as epicondylitis, tennis elbow is a real condition in which the elbow becomes sore and often tender on a regular basis. Can acupuncture help with tennis elbow? Quite possibly it can. Several studies have compared using actual acupuncture with a fake form of acupuncture, basically a non-insertion acupuncture, and have found that real acupuncture helps to deal with the pains of tennis elbow. For more, check out a study reported upon in the August 2002 issue of Research in Complementary and Classical Natural Medicine.
  6. Weight loss: Acupuncture might even be able to help in the battle of the bulge. According to a 1998 issue of Australian Family Physician, use of acupuncture aided in suppressing the appetite, thus allowing for the obese to have an easier route in losing weight.
  7. Headaches: Numerous studies have suggest acupuncture can ease the pain of serious, long-term headaches such as migraines. If you think you’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work, talk to you physician about giving acupuncture a try. If your doctor needs convincing, tell him or her to check out an article on headaches and acupuncture in the March 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal.
  8. Depression: Many articles and studies have shown that acupuncture or electro-acupuncture are at least as good as some drugs in treating depression or sometimes can improve the benefits of certain drugs,  thus helping to relieve the suffering of some patients. For further reading, look up the December 1998 issue of Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences.
  9. Hypertension: If you suffer from high blood pressure, you might want to consider giving acupuncture a try. A study reported about in the May 1994 Journal of the British Medical Acupuncture Society showed an improvement in hypertension patients who had had acupuncture performed on them.
  10. Infertility in men: Acupuncture might also be able to help improve the strength and quality and quantity of semen in men. A large number of studies have suggest positive effects, including a study reported upon in the Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Medical Science) which showed a dramatic improvement in the semen of men who had been treated with acupuncture. Always remember to use a professional, medically-trained acupuncturist.
