Mental Health: What is Stress?
In modern day lifestyle we often feel stressed out. Feeling stress is just becoming an integral part of our lives. But we need to remember that too much stress is bad our health and if we do not control it at the right time, in the long run it could be very fatal.
So how to deal with stress and anxiety? How do foods help us on overcoming stress and anxiety?
What is stress? Let’s find out.
It’s a bit complicated subject. Stress symptoms include mental, social, and physical manifestations. It’s a natural emotional response to the proceed danger. Often stress and anxiety end up in fear. Psychologically it’s called fight-or-flight response. So in case of anger your body gets ready for combat and in the case of fear your body prepares you to escape from the danger.
Stress is the matter of mind-body connection. When something unusual happens around you y our mind reacts to that then our body follows. In other words there’s physiological change in your body because of psychological reaction in the environment. For example in the case of fear, blood rushes towards the heart to prepare you to fight or run away. So there’s an actual physiological change to an emotional perception of something is going on in the environment.
Fight-or-flight stress response occurs mainly due to biological changes that prepare us for the emergency action and brain sets off the chemical alarm, the nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones and these stress hormones raise to the bloodstream – get ready us to fight it out or flee the scene. Our heart rate and blood flow increase so we can react faster (run or fight). Blood vessels constrict to prevent blood loss in case of injury, pupils dilate so you can see better and blood sugar level jumps up to give us the extra boost.
But at the same time- digestive and reproduction system slow down, growth hormones gets switched off, immune response becomes inhabitant.
So, in the case of chronic stress (when someone faces stress for a longer time or every time), stress can be a contributing factor to all major illness.
Here is how…
- When digestive system is slow that means it’s not absorbing the foods in a proper way.
- Slow reproductive system can cause sexual problem.
- Growth hormone system switched off means your body is not developing normally.
- Poor immune system means you are more vulnerable to diseases.
These are the main reasons of why stress or chronic stress is deadly for the health.
Too much of stress or chronic stress can actually cause psychiatric symptoms. Because at some point of time- sooner or later stress takes its toll and manages to destroy mental health completely.
Stress management can be a long and complicated issue. In case of serious stress problem it’s always advisable to consult with a doctor or psychiatric.
